Most of the work we do at Soundcrafter is for independent filmmakers on limited budgets where only one editor and one re-recording mixer are needed. Occasionally we get larger productions where multiple editors, recordist, designers and re-recording mixers are involved, but this only happens maybe two to three times a year. For two to three months each year we work on a couple TV series where only one highly trained re-recording mixer is needed per episode.
Technology has made it easier in sound to do much more with fewer people. Assistant editors are no longer needed except on the largest projects. On top of this there isn't enough media produced in Austin to support many post production sound specialists on a regular basis. The studio depends on a small group of four subcontractors who work here part time.
As a sound editor or mixer the best way to get your foot in the door at Soundcrafter is to bring a project you are working on to the facility.
